While trying to find the nippers and scrapper for the 500th time, I determined I have an organization problem. I have all these tools and parts stewn about, and I spend entirely way too much time combing through it all to find what I need. A few days earlier, I watched a video by Zack Freedman addressing this very issue. He designed a system called Gridfinity that provides options for the most common, and some of the uncommon, tools someone making something might need. Everything ranging from boxes that hold nuts, bolts, and screws, to a pen and marker holders, allen key holders, holders for glues, paints, and other consumables. There are a lot of options. These boxes then fit into one of a number of grid-like bases. These bases can be printed in a light version and heavy versions.
For my purposes, I wanted to get as many things as possible organized, and it didn't have to look perfect. So I opted to use a 1.0mm hardened steel nozzle and printed what I had left of the dark blue and Starry Sky PLA's. The 1.0mm nozzle really cut down the print times due to the think layer lines. I originally thought I might go back later and print using a 0.4 or even a 0.2 nozzle for better resolution, but I'm not sure. I really dont mind these things having fat layers. It kind of fits their purpose.
So far, I have quite a few options:
Holder for 6 nippers/pliers
Holder for digital calipers
Holder for 18 pens/markers
Box for different sized Allen key wrenches (Tolerances were tight on this box so I don't have the right sizes in the holes)
Box for deburrer tool and ten deburrer blades (This box is for a specific model that I do not have. The hole is wider than my deburrer. Works just fine though. Had to drill the blade holes to fit my size blade.)
Box for holding a bottle of Super Glue
Three 1/3rd height boxes. These are stackable. Currently using them to hold a few microcontrollers and watch batteries.
Nozzle holder that is half height. Holds up to 16 nozzles in the grooves and some slack space for extra storage.
Half height Xacto knife holder with slots for blades.
One issue I ran into is that there are not many options for half height boxes. The has left me with only half of my nozzle holder covered by the Xacto holder. I could print another Xacto holder, but I don't need a second one. I did find a half height chisel holder, but I don't have chisels. I printed one of these off anyway. When I didn't have anything that would work quite right in them, I tried to hollow out the box. This did not go well. I will just keep looking for other half height boxes.
I will need to print off a baseplate next.
